Our History
The South Okanagan Seniors Wellness Society has provided educational, cultural and outreach programs to older adults for almost 40 years. The Penticton & District Retirement Society was instrumental in the development, construction and operation of the retirement complex on Winnipeg Street in Penticton. With changes in government regulations, the society was relieved of the retirement care portion and continued operating the recreation facility under the new name of Penticton Seniors’ Recreation and Wellness Society. In 2007, a new mandate to relieve loneliness and isolation of older adults and improve their mobility and independence by providing outreach and education was established, along with the current name.
In the Fall of 2012, community consultation identified the society as one of the top service providers suited to deliver the Better at Home program which provides non- medical supports to help seniors remain independent at home. Penticton & District Community Resources Society was also identified as an organization with capacity to provide these services. As a result, the Boards of the two organizations met to discuss how to work together in a more collaborative fashion. We are now co-located and partnering with OneSky Community Resources (formerly Penticton & District Community Resources Society) to provide a seamless system of service delivery to seniors.
